The Federation of Sterea Hellas, Inc. was incorporated on May 21, 1946, as a not-for-profit 501(c)(10) fraternal organization. The Federation and its chapters are comprised of immigrants from Sterea Hellas (Central Greece) and their descendants residing in the United States of America and Canada.

Prior to the 1986 government administrative reform, Sterea Hellas consisted of seven Prefectures: Aitoloakarnania, Attica, Boeotia, Euboea, Evrytania, Phocis, and Phthiotis. The geographic area had borders to the North; Epiros and Thessalia, to the South; Gulfs of Corinth and Patras, to the East; the Aegean Sea and to the West; the Ionian Sea. Since then, the Prefectures have been changed to Regional Units and the borders have been changed eliminating some areas. However, to maintain consistency and cultivate fellowship within our members, the Federation recognizes the original borders prior to 1986, as Sterea Hellas. Therefore, membership eligibility is based on the geographic area as it was when the Federation of Sterea Hellas was created in 1946.

The Federation of Sterea Hellas USA and Canada coordinates activities of its chapters relating to national, educational and philanthropic goals throughout Sterea Hellas, USA and Canada. In addition, to focusing on preserving and promoting the rich history and culture of Sterea Hellas for the next generation.

THE HISTORY AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE FEDERATION OF STEREA HELLAS, U.S.A. AND CANADA

The memory remains indelible when the younger generation remembers and is grateful. And the older generation are those who at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century left with heartache their homeland, ROUMELI, and settled in America and Canada with the longing of work, progress and contributing to the society.

At that time in Greece, and especially in Roumeli, unbearable conditions of poverty and misery prevailed. Policies, tensions, wars, non-existent assistance from the state, the barren lands and complete lack of farming equipment were some of the factors that made progress and development in Roumeli impossible and the future of its inhabitants uncertain and dark.

Many of our compatriots, who could not live in poverty and misery, in a severe economic, political and social crisis, accepted the message of alienation and decided to leave their country, their families, their relatives, and friends and settle abroad and especially in America, which gave more hope for a better future.

The decision to leave was not an easy one and without sadness and pain. People left the friendly and familiar and went into the unknown, which caused fear. They left their land and everything that the word “homeland” meant. They did not know the language and had no education or trade.

The dream of a better and happier life overcame hesitation and fear. Our first compatriots took the road of separation, holding in their hands a little Greek soil, a picture of their loved ones, a little money for the journey and in their hearts the blessings of their parents.

THE PIONEERS AND THE FIRST YEARS OF MIGRATION

Thousands of Roumeliotes left their homeland and after a long and difficult journey, they arrived in the land of their dreams, North America.

They settled in various cities and worked hard to achieve their goals. They had to work hard for themselves, as well as to help their families back home. They also wanted to create strong ties among all the Roumeliotes in their new homeland.

Those pioneering compatriots of ours, who we can call heroes of the early years of migration, achieved their goals. They also retained their language, their customs, their friendships, spirit of hospitality and most importantly, family and church. It was they who later with the leadership of Archimandrite Daniel Gambrilis from Distomo founded the Federation of Sterea Hellas, USA and Canada (OSEAK).

The first organizations that participated and voted for its charter on October 31, 1945 in Detroit, MI were:

Together they gained strength and achieved their goals. On the one hand the Roumeliotes of America and Canada became closer and on the other hand they began to offer significant moral support and material aid to the motherland, Greece.

Through the years, thousands of dollars were donated directly by the Federation or by assisting its organizations in raising the money, for including (but not limited) the following causes:

Greece

  • Road equipment
  • Disasters, such as earthquakes, mudslides and fires
  • Equipment to the Agrinion Eye Clinic and medical instruments to the Lamia hospital
  • Helping the poor and orphans
  • Churches and monasteries, including televising the Sunday liturgy for those that could not attend church.
  • Cultural Center in Athens
  • Education, including the Academy of Paliambila and sponsoring young men and women who wished to study in the USA and Canada

USA

  • Promoting Greek studies
  • Scholarships to young men and women of Greek descent that excelled in their studies.
  • Purchase of Greek costumes
  • Supporting the OSEAK Youth
  • Nursing home in Chicago
  • Nicholas at Ground Zero in New York

Presenting, in summary, the history and contributions of the Federation, we looked backwards, towards our roots. We met the pioneering patriots, who opened the way. And we say, “Well done our dear patriots.”

We are now a new generation and many things have changed but even though some of us are born in America or Canada the one thing that has not and will never change is our love for our “homeland”, our religion and our culture. We want our pioneering patriots to be as proud of us as we are of them, and some day, we hope to pass the baton to the next generation, and they will eagerly accept it.

Η μνήμη παραμένει ανεξίτηλη όταν η νεότερη γενιά θυμάται και είναι ευγνώμονοι. Και η παλαιότερη γενιά είναι εκείνη που στα τέλη του 19ου και στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα άφησαν με πόνο στην καρδιά την πατρίδα τους, τη Ρούμελη, και εγκαταστάθηκαν στην Αμερική και τον Καναδά με τη λαχτάρα της εργασίας, της προόδου και της προσφοράς στην κοινωνία.

Εκείνη την εποχή στην Ελλάδα, και ιδιαίτερα στη Ρούμελη, επικρατούσαν αφόρητες συνθήκες φτώχειας και εξαθλίωσης. Πολιτικά, εντάσεις, πόλεμοι, ανύπαρκτη βοήθεια από το κράτος, άγονες εκτάσεις και έλλειψη γεωργικών μηχανημάτων ήταν μερικοί από τους παράγοντες που έκαναν αδύνατη την πρόοδο και την ανάπτυξη της Ρούμελης και το μέλλον των κατοίκων της αβέβαιο και σκοτεινό.

Πολλοί συμπατριώτες μας, που δεν μπορούσαν να ζήσουν μέσα στη φτώχεια και την εξαθλίωση, σε μια σοβαρή οικονομική, πολιτική και κοινωνική κρίση, δέχτηκαν το μήνυμα της αποξένωσης και αποφάσισαν να εγκαταλείψουν τη χώρα τους, τις οικογένειές τους, τους συγγενείς και τους φίλους τους και να εγκατασταθούν στο εξωτερικό και ιδιαίτερα στην Αμερική, που έδινε περισσότερες ελπίδες για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον.

Η απόφασή τους να φύγουν δεν ήταν εύκολη και χωρίς θλίψη και πόνο. Οι άνθρωποι άφησαν το φιλικό και οικείο και πήγαν στο άγνωστο, το οποίο προκάλεσε φόβο. Άφησαν τη γη τους και όλα όσα σήμαινε η λέξη “πατρίδα”.  Δεν ήξεραν τη γλώσσα και δεν είχαν μόρφωση ή τέχνη.

Το όνειρο μιας καλύτερης και πιο ευτυχισμένης ζωής ξεπέρασε το δισταγμό και το φόβο. Οι πρώτοι συμπατριώτες μας πήραν το δρόμο της ξενιτειάς, κρατώντας στα χέρια τους λίγο ελληνικό χώμα, μια φωτογραφία των αγαπημένων τους, λίγα χρήματα για το ταξίδι και στην καρδιά τους τις ευχές των γονιών τους.

ΟΙ ΠΡΩΤΟΠΟΡΟΙ ΚΑΙ ΤΑ ΠΡΩΤΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΜΕΤΑΝΑΣΤΕΥΣΗΣ

Χιλιάδες Ρουμελιώτες εγκατέλειψαν την πατρίδα τους και μετά από ένα μακρινό και δύσκολο ταξίδι, έφτασαν στη χώρα των ονείρων τους, τη Βόρεια Αμερική.

Εγκαταστάθηκαν σε διάφορες πόλεις και εργάστηκαν σκληρά για να επιτύχουν τους στόχους τους.  Έπρεπε να εργαστούν σκληρά για τον εαυτό τους, καθώς και για να βοηθήσουν τις οικογένειές τους πίσω στην πατρίδα.  Ήθελαν επίσης να δημιουργήσουν ισχυρούς δεσμούς μεταξύ όλων των Ρουμελιωτών στη νέα τους πατρίδα.

Αυτοί οι πρωτοπόροι συμπατριώτες μας, που μπορούμε να αποκαλέσουμε ήρωες των πρώτων χρόνων της μετανάστευσης, πέτυχαν τους στόχους τους.  Διατήρησαν επίσης τη γλώσσα τους, τα έθιμά τους, τις φιλίες τους, το πνεύμα φιλοξενίας και το σημαντικότερο, την οικογένεια και την εκκλησία.  Ήταν αυτοί που αργότερα με την ηγεσία του Αρχιμανδρίτη Δανιήλ Γαμβρίλη από το Δίστομο ίδρυσαν την Ομοσπονδία Στερεάς Ελλάδας, ΗΠΑ και Καναδά (ΟΣΕΑΚ).

Οι πρώτοι Συλλόγοι που συμμετείχαν και ψήφισαν για το καταστατικό στις 31 Οκτωβρίου 1945 στο Detroit, MI ήταν:

Μαζί απέκτησαν δύναμη και πέτυχαν τους στόχους τους. Από τη μια πλευρά ήρθαν πιο κοντά οι Ρουμελιώτες της Αμερικής και του Καναδά και από την άλλη άρχισαν να προσφέρουν σημαντική ηθική και υλική βοήθεια στην πατρίδα, τη μητέρα Ελλάδα.

Χιλιάδες δολάρια δωρήθηκαν απευθείας από την Ομοσπονδία ή βοηθώντας τους συλλόγους να συγκεντρώσουν τα χρήματα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων (αλλά όχι περιοριστικά), των ακόλουθων σκοπών:

Ελλάδα

  • Μηχανίματα για δρόμους  Καταστροφές, όπως σεισμοί, κατολισθήσεις λάσπης και πυρκαγιές
  • Μηχανίματα στην Οφθαλμολογική Κλινική Αγρινίου και ιατρικά όργανα στο νοσοκομείο Λαμίας Βοήθεια σε φτωχούς και ορφανά
  • Εκκλησίες και μοναστήρια, συμπεριλαμβάνοντας τηλεοπτική μετάδοσης της Κυριακάτικης Λειτουργίας για όσους δεν μπορούσαν να παρευρεθούν στην εκκλησία
  • Πνευματικό Κέντρο Αθήνας
  • Εκπαίδευση, συμπεριλαμβάνοντας την Ακαδημίας της Παλιάμπιλας και χορηγία νέων που επιθυμούσαν να σπουδάσουν στις ΗΠΑ και τον Καναδά

  • Υποστίριξη  ελληνικών σπουδών
  • Υποτροφίες σε νέους ομογενείς  που αρίστευσαν στις σπουδές τους
  • Αγορά ελληνικών ενδυμασιών
  • Υποστήριξη Νέων του ΟΣΕΑΚ
  • Γηροκομείο στο Σικάγο
  • Άγιος Νικόλαος, Ground Zero

Παρουσιάζοντας, συνοπτικά, την ιστορία και την προσφορά της Ομοσπονδίας, κοιτάξαμε προς τα πίσω, προς τις ρίζες μας.  Συναντήσαμε τους πρωτοπόρους πατριώτες, που άνοιξαν το δρόμο.  Και λέμε: «Μπράβο αγαπητοί μας πατριώτες».

Είμαστε τώρα μια νέα γενιά και πολλά πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει, αλλά το μόνο πράγμα που δεν έχει αλλάξει και δεν θα αλλάξει ποτέ είναι η αγάπη μας για την «πατρίδα» μας (παρόλο που μερικοί από εμάς γενηθήκαμε στην Αμερική ή στον Καναδά), τη θρησκεία μας και τον πολιτισμό μας.  Θέλουμε οι πρωτοπόροι πατριώτες μας να είναι τόσο περήφανοι για εμάς όσο και εμείς γι’ αυτούς και κάποια μέρα ελπίζουμε να παραδώσουμε τη σκυτάλη στην επόμενη γενιά και θα την δεχτούν με ανυπομονησία.
